Tess of the D'Urbervillies: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented

Though now considered a major nineteenth-century English novel and possibly Hardy's fictional masterpiece,Tess of the D'Urbervillies received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England. Set in Hardy's Wessex Tess is a moving story of hypocrisy and double standards that was often condemned as immoral and pessimistic.

Tess, the daughter of a poor and dissipated villager, learns that she may be descended from the ancient family of D'urbervillie. In her search for respectability her story assumes the proportions of a Greek tragedy when she meets two very different men!

With live music, multiple characterisation, humour and inventiveness, yet another English classic novel is brought wonderfully to life - Hotbuckle style!

There will be no cafe for hotbuckle in November but the show will still go ahead.
